Local grilled cuisine...
St Maarten is known to be one of the islands in the Caribbean to exhibit numerous local roadside eateries. If you're looking for something off the beat and path and not touristy, then this is the one for you. Unlike the Grand Case Lolos, big 'J' stands alone and commands an audience for both locals and visitors.
Of all the Local spots on St Maarten, this road side grill stands out with its uniqueness and traditional style of food preparation on the Caribbean Islands.
Local food specialist John is the islands most popular barbecue man and can boast about his popularity throughout the world. I believe his motto is basic. Keep it simple and use what you got and the people will come.
Nestled in the Cole Bay Neighborhood, this establishment is open 6 days of the week from around 7 PM and sets up shop Under the Shade of a few Genip trees. Johnny provides a simple setting of wooden beach chairs and tables to accommodate just about twelve customers. His clientele is mainly take away.
Patrons have the opportunity to stick around till about 12:00 when he closes off. One can often see regulars with a bottle of cold Heineken or a beer of their preference in their hands as you pass by.
Another great benefit of being at this great eatery is having the opportunity to sit or mingle right in between the locals. Just like having a ride on a local bus, the gossip of politics and the much talked about local conditions on the island reign supremely at the heart of the conversations.
Johnny specializes in his delicious finger licking grilled lobster and chicken. A highlight is his beautiful display of lobsters that line the grill. Pound for pound you cant beat the price of his lobster any other part of the Island. I've eaten at Johnny on numerous occasions and enjoyed the menu especially the Grilled Shrimp. Johnny B's menu is simple and mainly consist of Grilled Lobster, Ribs, Chicken or shrimp with a side of green salad, potato salad or rice.
For those of you who already know Johnny, he also now has a restaurant just after the Simpson's Bay bridge at the market place that serves great meals.
The spot is located in Cole Bay. From Philipsburg, take the Cole Bay hill down to the round about and make a right. As soon as you make the right it will be on your left hand side. From Simpson's bay (airport) head to Cole Bay and pass Kentucky Chicken on your left. Drive all the way around the round about and towards the direction of Marigot. As soon as you get off the round about it will be on the left hand side.
