This is my favorite since it's cheap and very practical.
Philipsburg, Marigot, Grand case and French Quarter are the major points of departure.
My wife and i have done the marigot routes on trips that we didn't have our daughter. The routes cover 95% of all main roads on the island with the exception of the French cul-de-sac.
In most cases you're expected to pay when you enter but the drivers are so laid back that most of the time they won't be bothered to enforce the rules.
You can catch a daytime St Maarten Bus for each segment at $2.00 US maximum.
If you're traveling into the popular town of Grand Case from Philipsburg (The Dutch Capital) you'll need to make a transfer when you stop in the town of Marigot (The French Capital). That will cost you another $2.00

Oh by the way, you need to stick your hand out for the bus to stop. "I know, I know" - some cities you don't need to do that. Hey - This is the Caribbean.
