Kettys Kitchen
Enjoy a Great Local Meal...

Kettys kitchen serves up a delicious plate of food...

I start off most afternoons with the depressing feeling and the notion that I wont be able to find something a little more unique for lunch. This day in particular was especially bothersome since it was a Wednesday and the cruise ships were in. This simply means that there is bumper to bumper traffic all over the place.

Never the less I started to roam the streets of Philipsburg in search of something new or at least a bit different. They are many way side Canteen, grill type food places around with a variety of different foods from the Caribbean islands.

I decided to stop off today at Ketty's bar and restaurant located on the pond fill road just off the round about next to the police station.

I Parked up my car on the half way done, so called ring road and wobbled into the open aired seating area with its Mobile van parked up next to it. The location of Kettys kitchen provides great relaxation and a steady breeze from the great salt pond.

On entry you wont expect much as you make your way in from any direction and to the front of the serving area. A few raggedy seats and tables create that rustic look and tells you in an instant that this was no five star establishment but instead a place where you can find some seriously GREAT local dishes.

The first thing I noticed was an interesting older gentleman with a pair of shorts and sandals cleaning a table and watching me as much as to say, "come on in". The sound of his radio belted out the mid day program and demanded your attention as the broadcaster took command of the topic in question. Mr. Lake as he is known, makes sure your visit to Kettys is as worry free as possible.

There was no waiter at Kettys Kitchen so I simply ordered and waited about 5 minutes as the lady behind the counter served me up one of the most delicious meals I had eaten in a long time. It was a meal of baked chicken legs, rice and peas, salad and a serving of fried plantains.

I sat facing the road and enjoyed every minute of the meal including the bones and then licked my fingers. The back drop of the salt pond with just a few mangrove plants provided the necessary ambiance for the occasion, while the constant flow of vehicles on the other side provided enough movement for a city atmosphere.

The place was busy as many of the hungry patrons took this time of the day to have a lunch break at Ketty's.

For the most part, I witnessed customers ordering to take away. However, if you plan to have your meal on the spot, Lake surely will engage you in an interesting conversation.

On the menu you can get BBQ ribs, baked chicken wings, potato salad, Baked chicken legs, stewed beef, stewed chicken, soups and snacks. Need I say more? Ketty is as friendly as ever and you cant help but wonder if you've met before. The gentleman cleaning the table provides yo with a conversation about the latest news and some of the most interesting topics that i have heard.

Kettys kitchen lands in #1 on on my list for way side canteens and road side grills.
