Once you've arrived the transport meter will flash on red. Here are a few quick pointers that might help you to decide what to do.
- Knowledge of the Island (number of visits)
- Time of year (high/low season)
- Time of day (rush/calm hr)
- Available time (cruise or stay over)
- Budget
If you make it in on the last American Eagle at about 10 PM. The line at the immigration's booth at this time is easy.
However the wait at the customs belt would prevent you from flying through the arrival hall and straight into a taxi. Taxi? You heard me right. My wife swears one day we'll be VIP.
More often than not we've traveled on long three legged trips. My advice to you is -
Take a Taxi. Plan ahead and spend the extra buck if you have it to get you from the airport to your intended destination. Getting from point to point will be a breeze once you've mastered the basics.
DONT WORRY! With a confident start, things will fall into place very quickly. You soon realize that you probably wouldn't need to go anywhere for the first full day anyway. If you're anything like this family, you'll be resting on one of the 37 beaches.
HERE ARE YOUR ST MAARTEN TRANSPORTATION CHOICES
- A rental car is an excellent choice for beach hopping with the entire family.
It also takes care of rainy days and shopping.
- Or maybe a scooter is the ideal thing for you.
Quick and snazzy does it.
- Taxi is always the safest and hassle free way to travel if you can afford it.
My wife calls it door to door.
- When all fails, jump on the BUS. The slickest way to meet the culture as we've done so many times.
Don't underestimate this form of transportation
- Sorry, no trains on the Island. YET.
Of course there are many other ways to get around this exciting island such as excursions, friends, etc. Mix and match the st maarten transportation system as you like to suit your needs. Plan it well and you'll be on the right foot to a perfect vacation.
Later on i'll introduce you to my favorite taxi and rental guys. On ninety percent of my family vacations we've rented cars and hired taxis on the same trip. Doesn't matter where you are in the world. They'll be some days that you just will not need the car.
